The last time the legendary 83 year-young trumpet player Bobby Lewis appeared at Studio5 he told me about “Louis by Lewis” – something he’s put together with the extraordinary trombonist, Russ Phillips. Together they celebrate the music of Louis Armstrong in a context similar to the group Armstrong maintained for years, “The All-Stars”. Louis’ band always featured a trombone-playing foil to Satch’s muscular trumpet. There were a number of notable trombonists that filled that role, including Jack Teagarden, Trummy Young, and one Russ Phillips, Sr.
Perhaps you’re a step ahead of me here. Yes, Russ Phillips, Sr. was the father of our Russ Phillips, and Russ Jr. has lots of stories of hanging out as a youngster with his dad and the rest of Armstrong’s band. Can you imagine? Well, for one night at Studio5 you can close your eyes and pretend you’re there as we celebrate the music of Louis Armstrong, with someone who was there. And as much as this will be a celebration of ol’ Dippermouth, let us not forget that since its inception, jazz has been a music passed down, player to player, generation to generation, sometimes even parent to child. What a beautiful thing. Let’s celebrate that, too.
We'll be recording this performance for Chicago Jazz Live on WDCB, so you'll be part of the studio audience! See you there. -SR
