A joyous celebration of the music of Jethro Burns
One magical night in 1983, two musical giants, harmonica/piano virtuoso Howard Levy, and granddaddy of the jazz mandolin, Jethro Burns, met on a Chicago stage for a fiery set of music. Oh to have been a fly on the wall for that one! Well, remarkably, while going through some old boxes a few months ago, Howard discovered a recording of that very night! No one knew it existed and it has never been released. Until now, that is. Howard had it remastered and is celebrating its CD release with this concert! Howard told me, “Yes, it was always fun with Jethro, and that night in 1983, our first concert together since we had played with Steve Goodman in the late 70's, particularly so!” Of course, Jethro is no longer with us (he passed in 1989), but who better to step into his shoes than his undisputed musical heir (and Jethro’s frequent onstage partner in Jethro’s later years), our buddy, Don Stiernberg? Rounding out the group for the evening will be the fabulous bassist, Jim Cox, and the same rhythm guitarist who was on that gig in 1983, the wonderful John Parrott. Super session indeed!
So come celebrate the release of “Howard and Jethro – Super Session of Swing” and pick up a copy for yourself! Attendees will be able to purchase the CD for just $10 at the show.
We'll be recording this performance for Chicago Jazz Live on WDCB, so you'll be part of the studio audience! See you there. -SR
